Sholla House
23-11 33rd Rd., Astoria, NY 23-11 33rd Rd., Astoria, NY 33rd Rd., Astoria, NY 11106 Residential

A renovation of an existing 3-story house in Astoria, Queens for a young family who want to open up the main level to create an open and light floor plate whilst maximizing storage and functionality in the upper and lower levels

The existing house is dark and relatively unwelcoming but offers a large canvas for a young family to grow. The building systems and finishes are old and require a significant upgrade to bring them up to modern standards.

Our proposal sweeps away the existing walls at Level 1 and opens up the kitchen, dining and living areas into one light-filled space. This level has a predominantly white palette. The upper and lower levels are designed as smaller, more intimate spaces and filled with cabinetry to enhance functionality and storage. The materials at these levels are warmer and more tactile. A feature set of cabinetry links the three levels around the staircase and has common materials / design elements at each level.
