A serene home contrasting the intensity of NYC and provide a strong sense of beauty and craftsmanship

This apartment, located in Hoboken, New Jersey is at the penthouse level of a building facing onto a park and the Hudson River; benefitting from large amounts of daylight. It comprises the combination of two very basic apartments into one unit for a Swiss couple who both worked in the finance industry.

The client wanted to create a special environment with a serene, peaceful atmosphere within which they could display their collection of art objects. The solution was to create a large living room / display area with all of the support functions gathered together into a ‘black bar’ which runs along the rear of the apartment. A walkway within this space has a lower wooden ceiling which steps up and lightens in the living space, taking advantage of the daylight.

The materiality of the apartment is crucial in helping to define spaces and allow the introduction of a strong sense of craftsmanship. Ebony paneling is used on the interior side of the apartment with a universal flooring of stained oak. 2 solid oak sliding doors were fabricated on site and emphasize the solidity and quality of the overall construction.
